Peri Kay Oldham was born in Waco, Texas and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin before starting her local radio career. She made her television debut in the late eighties and began playing bit parts on 21 Jump Street and Matlock. Her first regular role was in the 1991 sitcom Flesh and Blood, which was canceled after several episodes.
Gilpin is best known for her role as producer of Rose Doyle in the long-running comedy series Frazier, where she starred over eleven seasons, from 1993 to 2004. She previously appeared in an episode of the sitcom Cheers, the spin-off of which is Frazier. Together with the cast, she was nominated for the Screen Actors Guild Award for ten years in a row every year, winning once, in 2000. Notably, Gilpin is the only main cast member who has never been nominated for an Emmy.
During her career, Gilpin has appeared in several made-for-television films and voiced several cartoons. After the completion of Fraser, Gilpin starred opposite Heather Locklear in the pilot for ABC's sitcom Middle Aged Women, but the show was not greenlit for further production. Since then, she has mostly guest roles on TV shows like The Medium, Desperate Housewives, Law & Order. Malicious Intent, Grey's Anatomy, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and Pretty Women in Cleveland, where she reunited with Jane Leaves, a fellow Frazier. From 2009 to 2011, she was a regular cast member on the teenage TV series Get it or Break, where she played the main character's mother. In 2010 she received a Gracie Award for her role in the series.
