Born 28 March 1943, Barnstaple, Devon, UK - English film director, screenwriter and producer.
Received his first education at the University of Cambridge. Then he studied at the College of Oxford University.
Ayr began his professional career with work in the theater. From 1967 to 1972 he directed at the Royal Lyceum Theater in Edinburgh.
He is best known for his work at the Royal National Theater in Great Britain (1987-1997). Successfully staged such theatrical performances as "Hamlet", "Richard III", "King Lear". Of the operatic productions, La Traviata, staged in 1994 with Angela Gheorgheu, is the most remarkable.
Richard Eyre has combined his directorial position at the Royal National Theater with television (BBC). Filmed a documentary on the Falklands Conflict that won a BAFTA National Award.
During his directing career, Ayr has shot two dozen films.
He became world famous as a filmmaker after the film Iris (2001), which in 2002 brought him a nomination for the Berlin Film Festival Golden Bear and two nominations for the British Film Academy Award: Best Adapted Screenplay and Alexander Korda Award for Most Outstanding British Film of the Year. " In addition, he directed such films as "Beauty in English" (2004), "Scandalous Diary" (2006).
