Shay was born in Detroit, Michigan and graduated from the University of Michigan. She is the sister of Robert Shay, founder of New Line Cinema, and has appeared in several films of his production, such as Dumb and Dumber.
Shay has played over a hundred film roles and appeared in dozens of television shows during her four-decade career. She played supporting roles in films of various genres, among which one can note "Galloping From Afar" (1980), "Everybody's Crazy About Mary" (1998), "Detroit - City of Rock" (1999), "Dead End" (2003), "The Story of Cinderella" (2004), "Snake Flight" (2006) and "Astral" (2010). First of all, she is known for her acting in horror and thrillers, as well as comedies. She has appeared on television with small roles in shows such as Ambulance, My Name Is Earl and Falcon Crest.
Shay's greatest acclaim has come from her role as the protagonist's neighbor in the comedy "Mad About Mary" (1998) and Alice Reiner in the horror films Astral (2010), Astral: Chapter 2 (2013) and Astral: Chapter 3. "(2015). For her role in Astral, Shay was nominated for a Saturn Award in 2012.
