Simon Baker was born in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia to Elizabeth Lubberton, a school English teacher, and Barry Baker, a gardener and mechanic. He attended Ballina High School, graduating in 1986. Baker then moved to Sydney to study as a nurse, but he never received his diploma. He was increasingly invited to the set after he and a friend attended auditions as moral support.
Simon was raised in the spirit of Catholicism. He emigrated to the United States in 1995.
Married to Australian actress Rebecca Rigg. The couple have three children: Stella, Claude and Harry. Until recently, they lived in Malibu, California, until the actor temporarily returned back to Sydney. The family currently lives in Los Angeles.
Previously, Simon Baker competed in state-level surfing and water polo competitions and was a champion athlete.
His acting career began on Australian television in the late 1980s, initially known as Simon Baker Denny. He starred in the music video for the song "Read My Lips" by Melissa Tkauz and the music video "Love You Right" by the popular Australian trio "Euphoria" in 1991, until he landed on the hit series Home and Away as James Healy. the soap opera "E Street" and the series "School of Broken Hearts."
Baker moved to the United States, where he began work under the name of his stepfather, Tom Denny. He was cast for the small but significant role of Matt Reynolds in Curtis Hanson's Oscar-winning thriller "Los Angeles Secrets", thanks to the success of which he subsequently began to get roles in more films.

Baker is a candidate for the role of Steve Trevor in the long-announced but ever-delayed Wonder Woman. The actor has co-starred Patrick Jane, an extremely intelligent and observant detective, on the CBS series The Mentalist, which began airing in 2008. For this role, he was nominated for an Emmy and Golden Globe in 2009.
In 2003, Baker won the Australian Courageous Television Personality Award at the annual Fugly Awards.
