As a filmmaker, he made his debut in 1998 with American Story X, a racist drama. The main roles in the film were played by Edward Norton and Edward Furlong. The film was well received by critics, and Norton was even nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor.

Kay's second major project was a documentary called Lake of Fire. The film was devoted to the problem of abortion, around which there was then a lot of talk in the United States. The film was first shown at the 2006 Toronto International Film Festival. The film was shortlisted for an Oscar and was also nominated for Best Documentary for the Independent Spirit Awards, the Chicago Film Critics Association and Sputnik. Kay spent 18 years on the creation of "Lake of Fire".

Black Water Transit (2009), Kay's third film, stars such actors as Laurence Fishburne, Karl Urban, Evan Ross, Brittany Snow and Stephen Dorff. The film was not finished yet, as the production company went bankrupt during its creation.

Kay's fourth film was "The Substitute Teacher", which was released in 2011. The plot of the film tells about the problems of the educational system in American high schools. It is noteworthy that the film starred the director's daughter, Betty Kay.
