She was born in Winnipeg (Canada) in a family of school teachers. Anna's father Brian Paquin (born 1952) is a physical education teacher, Canadian by birth, mother Mary Paquin is an English teacher. Anna is the youngest child in the family, she also has an older brother Andrew (born in 1977) and an older sister Katya (born in 1980).
From four to nine years old, Anna lived in New Zealand. She graduated from school in 1996 in Los Angeles, where she moved with her mother after her divorce from Anna's father.
In August 2000, Anna entered Columbia University, where she studied for only one year, postponing her studies while filming a movie.
