Cyrene was about 7 years old when he watched Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark - another of his favorite films - and has been eager to become an actor ever since.
When Cyrene was 14 years old, his family - parents Sue and Steve, older brother Damon and younger brother Jamie - moved north from Auckland to Whangarei, and while the boy lived there, he started with the basics of acting in amateur theater. From 1989 to 1993, Cyrene played three seasons at the North Island Youth Theater (NYT) and a season at the Hawke's Bay Youth Theater School in 1992.
After graduation, he auditioned for the local soap series Shortland Street and, to his surprise, landed the role of Jonathan McKenna. Later, in an interview, Kiren said that he thought he made a shocking impression at the audition. So Cyrene returned to Auckland before his eighteenth birthday, spending six months filming the show, and over the next few years he returned to the show three more times, graduating in 1996. In between filming on Shortland Street, Kiren landed guest roles on Riding High as Steven Brighton and in one of the episodes of the first season of Xena: Warrior Princess as Talus.
In 1996, Kiren auditioned for Cloud 9's The Adventures of the Swiss Robinson Family and moved to Wellington for the second half of this year. The six weeks of filming in Fiji, according to Cyrene, was a terrific school for him. It was a great pleasure for him to meet Richard Thomas (who played the television father of David Robinson) and his family there, with whom he is still on good friends.
