Born March 23, 1968 in Leightonstone (East London), into a bohemian family. Damon's mother, Hazel Albarn, is from Lincoln County. She worked as stage set designer at London's Royal Stratford East Theater. Father - Keith Albarn, was born in Nottingham. He was engaged in furniture design. Damon's parents were fond of hippie culture. This creative family was friends with representatives of the London psychedelic underground of the 60s, including with musicians from the group "Soft Machine". Keith Albarn was even the tour manager of Soft Machine in the 60s .
At school, Damon studied guitar, piano and violin. When he was ten years old, the family moved to Colchester, Essex. So Albarn became a student at the Stanway Comprehensive School, where he met future Blur guitarist Graham Coxon. When he was 15 years old, one of his compositions won a British Young Composer of the Year award. Damon later stated that Kurt Weill's classical music had more influence on his musical development than the work of any pop musician. Together with Coxon, they played in the amateur music group The Aftermath. Then there was the Real Lives, where Damon sang and played the piano. They even gave several performances in local pubs and clubs, but did not succeed. After graduating from high school, Albarn returned to London to enter the theater school "East 15". After a year of training, he considered himself a "terrible" actor (although later, in 1997, played a supporting role in the film "The Authority") and took up writing and performing music. Some of the songs he wrote during this period later ended up in Blur's repertoire, such as "Birthday" from his debut album "Leisure".
