Brooks was born and raised in Austin, Texas, where he attended LC Anderson High School. After graduating from high school in 1999, he entered the University of Southern California film and television department. Brooks mentioned in the September 2010 episode of The Wendy Williams Show that he turned down a basketball scholarship and an Ivy League invitation in favor of the University of Southern California. He then left to pursue an acting career.
Mehkad is the son of former NFL receiver Billy Brooks.
Brooks told IGN that he is a fan of PC games, especially sports games like Madden NFL 07 or NBA 2K, as well as action films from the Call of Duty and Medal of Honor series.
He dated Thing co-star Serinda Swan before they split in 2011.
In July 2010, Brooks appeared in an issue of GQ magazine alongside Emanuela de Paula.
He also appeared in the Center for Reproductive Rights video that marked Roe v. Wade's fortieth anniversary.
