Born in Oklahoma to a sheriff's family in the small town of Endarko. Jim's father was a gambler. He squandered government money and was fired from service. To avoid arrest, he went with his family to Mexico. For 14 years, the Thompson family moved from one oil field to another in the hope of getting rich. Nothing succeeded. Thompson's father suffered a stroke, from which he did not recover until his death. Jim graduated from the University of Nebraska. He worked at a factory and at oil wells. During the Great Depression, he joined the federal writing project in Oklahoma. Their goal was to publish state guides. During Prohibition, Thompson got to know the world of gangsters and corrupt officials. who later became the heroes of his books. In 1931, he married and joined the Communist Party. The decision to become a writer was dictated by the need to earn money. In 1941, the first novel by the writer "Now and on Earth" was published. In the 1940s, Thompson worked as a journalist for the New York daily news and the Los Angeles Times Mirror. In the early 50s, he was blacklisted by Senator McCarthy for his membership in the Communist Party. He was out of work. During these years he wrote the autobiography "The Bad Guy" and the novel "Alcoholics" (both 1953), based on the experience of his own uneasy relationship with alcohol. In the late 50s, Thompson was invited to Hollywood by Stanley Kubrick. He co-wrote two scripts for this director. Many of Thompson's own novels were also filmed.
