Father is an engineer, mother is a teacher of the Russian language. Graduated from the Physics Department of Odessa University. In 1979 she moved to her husband in Kiev. The first publication was in the magazine Grani (1982).
was arrested on September 17, 1982, on March 3, 1983 convicted under Article 62 of the Criminal Code of the Ukrainian SSR ("anti-Soviet agitation and propaganda"), sentenced to 7 years in prison and 5 years in exile.
The years spent in a maximum security women's colony for "especially dangerous state criminals" in Mordovia are described in the autobiographical book "Gray is the color of hope." She was admitted in absentia to the international PEN-club.
On October 4, 1986, in accordance with the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, she was released ahead of schedule from further serving her sentence.
