Born March 23, 1945, Buffalo, New York - American screenwriter and television producer.
In 1966, David Milch graduated with honors from Yale University, where his achievements in English language were recognized by the special Tinker Prize. He received his Master of Arts from the University of Iowa Writing Department. He studied law for a time at Yale Law School and then became a professor of English literature and writing at Yale University. Co-author of several college literature textbooks; published his works in the literary magazines The Atlantic Monthly and Southern Review.
Lives in Los Angeles. He has three children: two daughters - Elizabeth and Olivia, a son - Benjamin.
Milch is the owner of several thoroughbred racehorses. In 2001 his stallion Val Royal won the national Breeders' Cup Mile.
In 1982, Milch wrote the screenplay for the third season of Hill Street Blues, earning his first Emmy Award for it, and thus embarking on a successful and long-standing career in television. For five seasons he was involved in the filming of Blues Hill Street, first as editor-in-chief of the script department and then as executive producer. Milch co-wrote and executive produced the popular US television series NYPD, which aired on ABC from 1993 to 2005. With his colleague, Stephen Bochko, he created several more shows that did not receive screen time for more than one season: another police drama South Brooklyn (1997-1998, CBS) and the detective series Total Security ; 1997, ABC). In 2001, he attempted to launch his own police series, Big Apple, but failed: only eight episodes aired on CBS. From 2002 to 2006, Milch worked on the historical western series Deadwood for the cable TV channel HBO, as a creator, co-writer and executive producer. In total, three seasons (36 episodes) have been released. His second project for HBO was the mystical drama "John of Cincinnati" (co-written with Keem Nunn), shown in 2007 (only one season). The third series, Last of the Ninth (about the New York police in the 1970s), which was announced in October of the same year, never came out. In January 2010, Milch announced that he was preparing a new drama for HBO called Luck, which is based on horse racing. The series premiered on December 11, 2011. The pilot was directed by Michael Mann. Leading actors include Dustin Hoffman and Nick Nolte. The series was renewed for a second season, but filming was subsequently canceled. In November 2011, HBO announced an agreement with Red Board Productions, led by David Milch, to launch films and television series based on the literary works of William Faulkner.
