David Thornton graduated from Hamilton College and Yale School of Drama, studied at the studio of film actor Lee Strasberg.

Thornton's father, Dr. Robert Donald Thornton, an expert on the Scottish poet Robert Burns, taught English at Harvard University for 45 years.
