Born June 21, 1983 - American actor and singer.
Smollett was born in Santa Rosa, California but raised in New York. He has three brothers and two sisters, including Jerny Smollett. As a child, he began his acting career, appearing in the films The Mighty Ducklings and The North. He then appeared on television with his siblings in the short-lived ABC sitcom In My Square (1994-1995) .
After retiring as a child, Smollett did not appear on screen until 2012. In 2012, he starred in the LGBT film Skinny. Later that year, he released his debut mini-album, The Poisoned Hearts Club, and has since appeared on the Mindy Project and Revenge. In 2014, he landed a central role in the Fox primetime soap Empire, playing Jamal Lyon, the gay son of Taraji P. Henson.
Smollett is openly gay.
