She began her career as a dancer with the John Tiller troupe (1854-1925). Phyllis then left her native England to appear on the Australian stage.
In 1925-1947, Phyllis played in 44 films and at the beginning of her film career, she appeared in the credits under the name Phyllis Doo Barry.
Phyllis was also a singer and in 1933 she sang the song "No More War" in the film "Diplomaniax", in which she also played the role of Fifi.
