While still at school, Sonya began her career as a model, and in 2004 she won the Miss Teen USA beauty contest. Thanks to the victory in the competition, a beautiful girl with an unusual appearance began to be invited to shoot in the magazines Women's Health, Outside and Foam.
After graduating from high school, Balmores entered the University of Hawaii, where she studied visual communication.
In 2006, Balmores began acting in the teenage TV series Beyond the Break.
