Cravaglio stated that she initially had no intention of auditioning for Moana because, in her words, "there was already so much great stuff on YouTube." However, an Oahu-based "talent agent" found her at a charity pageant and asked to audition for the role. The Walt Disney Company stated that Cravalho was the last of hundreds of actresses to be cast.
