Born February 23, 1920 in Irkutsk, in the family of a Russified German. People's Artist of the USSR (1959). Singer, bass. Studied at the Glazunov Theater and Music School. As a second year student, he was invited by the soloist of the Bolshoi Theater Sergei Ostroumov to the opera ensemble of the Moscow Philharmonic, directed by Ivan Kozlovsky. In 1938-1941 he studied at the Glazunov Music College (class of A. Mineev). At the same time he performed in concerts of the Moscow Philharmonic Society and in performances of the Opera Ensemble under the direction of I. Kozlovsky. From November 1942 to April 1943, as part of the front-line brigade, he gave concerts on the Bryansk and Volkhov fronts. From May 1, 1943 to 1969, he was a soloist with the Bolshoi Theater. Petrov's voice is powerful, beautiful timbre, expressive in a wide chanting sound. Among the roles are Boris Godunov (Mussorgsky's opera of the same name), Kochubei (Mazepa), Dosifei (Khovanshchina) by Mussorgsky, Mephistopheles (Faust by Gounod). The last performance on the Bolshoi stage took place on May 23, 1969 in the opera The Decembrists. He left the theater suddenly: after listening to his last recording, Ivan Ivanovich did not recognize his own voice and decided that the diabetes discovered in him had discolored the sound. The artist asked to erase the recording and since then has not sang or recorded. He left the stage at the zenith of fame. Ivan Petrov's talent was not limited only to music, he was an excellent teacher, an excellent dramatic artist: he played the role of Zeb Stump in the famous Russian film “The Headless Horseman”. I. Petrov paid much attention to the education of young performers. In recent years, he has worked as a vocal consultant with the Bolshoi Opera Company. As chairman, deputy chairman, member of the jury, he participated in music competitions named after Tchaikovsky, Glinka, Rachmaninov, Chaliapin. Within the framework of the International Union of Musical Figures, he took part in music competitions in France, Greece, Switzerland, Romania. Ivan Ivanovich Petrov died on December 27, 2003 in Moscow, and was buried at the Kuntsevo cemetery.
