May 17, 1911 - June 23, 1998 - Irish actress who made a successful career in Hollywood in the 1930s. Mother of actress Mia Farrow.
Born in the small town of Boyle, Irish County Roscommon on May 17, 1911, the son of Mary Lovatt and Charles Joseph O'Sullivan. She received her primary education at a convent school in Dublin, and then studied at the Convent of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in London, where her classmate was Vivien Leigh. After completing her studies, Maureen returned to Dublin.
Her film career began after she met director Frank Borzeiga, who invited her for a small role in his film "Song of My Heart" (1930). After the release of the film, Maureen moved to Hollywood, where she decided to seriously pursue an acting career. Over the next couple of years, Maureen starred in several films for 20th Century Fox and MGM, then directed by Irving Thalberg and cast as Jane Parker in Tarzan: The Ape Man (1932). This role became a star in O'Sullivan's career and in the following years of this decade she was in great demand in Hollywood, starring six more times as Jane in the sequels of the film. Maureen also appeared in The Thin Man (1934), The Barrets of Wimpole Street (1934), David Copperfield (1935), Anna Karenina (1935), The Devil's Doll (1936), The Day at the races "(1937), After the release of Tarzan's Adventure in New York (1942), Maureen stopped acting for several years, devoting herself to her husband, actor and director John Farrow, and daughter, Mia Farrow. Later, Maureen gave birth to six more children from John, three of whom in the future also linked their careers with cinema. In subsequent years, O'Sullivan began to appear much less on the big screen, and to a greater extent appeared on television and performed on Broadway. In the late 1980s, Maureen played several major film roles, including Norma, the mother of Mia Farrow's character in Hannah and Her Sisters (1986), Elizabeth Alvorg in Peggy Sue Got Married (1986) and Gracie Clarke in The Exiles (1987). In 1990, she had a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Hollywood Boulevard 6541.
Maureen O'Sullivan died of complications from heart surgery on June 23, 1998 at the age of 87.
