The future actor was born in New York into a family of Jewish immigrants from Russia, David and Hannah Garfinkle. After the death of his mother, he was sent to a school for troubled children in the Bronx, where he first showed his acting skills. In the early 1930s, he managed to get a scholarship to the acting school of Maria Uspenskaya, thanks to which in 1932 he already made his Broadway debut. Soon Garfield became quite famous in the theater circles of New York, and the famous screenwriter Clifford Odets even wrote the play "Golden Boy" especially for him. But by coincidence, Garfield was never involved in it in the lead role in the main cast, and was content only with the role of a substitute.
In 1937, John Garfield decided to leave Broadway and try his luck in Hollywood. After just a year working there, the actor received critical acclaim and an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor in Four Daughters, starring the Lane sisters.
With the entry of the United States into World War II, Gafrild volunteered to join the American army, but was refused due to heart disease. Despite this, he still decided to do his best to support the American soldiers, and together with actress Bette Davis became the driving force behind the work of the Hollywood Canteen, which offered food and entertainment for American soldiers. Later, the actor went to Yugoslavia, where he took part in organizing entertainment programs for military personnel.

In 1948, the actor received a second Oscar nomination for his role as Charlie Davis in Body and Soul. In the same year he returned to Broadway, where he starred in the play Skipper Near God. After his contact with the studio came to an end, Garfield decided not to renew it, but organized his own independent production company, becoming one of the pioneers in this direction.
Garfield, being a supporter of liberal political views, supported the Committee to Protect the First Amendment to the Constitution, which opposed government interference in the political beliefs of citizens. His wife, Roberta Seidman, was a member of the US Communist Party, which is why the actor himself was suspected of sympathizing with the Communists. During his visit to the Anti-American Activities Committee, which was investigating alleged communist infiltrations in the United States, John Garfield refused to name the members of the Communist Party or their followers known to him, which attracted the ire of the committee and was blacklisted in Hollywood. The lack of interesting offers for the shooting forced the actor to return to Broadway, where in 1952 he still played the main role in the play "Golden Boy" written for him .
Long-term heart problems that plagued the actor since childhood, aggravated by the stress of being on the Hollywood blacklist, led to the sudden death of John Garfield in May 1952 at the age of 39.
