December 18, 1904 - March 8, 1975 - American film director, film producer, screenwriter and cameraman. From 1941 to 1943 President of the Directors Guild of America.
He started as a cameraman working on short comedies with Laurel and Hardy. His first feature film was the serial comedy Coens and Kelly in Trouble (1933). Alice Adams (1935) with Katharine Hepburn was a real directorial breakthrough for him. In the late 1930s he directed several films with Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire, in 1940 - "Night Watch" (1940) with Carol Lombard.
During World War II he served in the Signal Corps, in 1943-1946 he headed the film division. Filmed newsreels: Operation Neptune, the liberation of Paris, the meeting on the Elbe, the release of prisoners from the Duben and Dachau camps. Stevens helped prepare the camp chronicle for the Nuremberg Trials. In 2008, Stevens Newsreel was added to the National Film Register. Stevens' military experience affected his work - they became more dramatic. I Remember Mom (1948) is the last film to contain comic scenes. Stevens is best known for his films A Place in the Sun, Shane, The Diary of Anne Frank, The Giant, The Greatest Story Ever Told. His last work was the film "The only fun in town" (1970) with Warren Beatty and Elizabeth Taylor. In the same year, he headed the jury for the 20th Berlin Film Festival.
