Lived with his parents at the house of his uncle Jack Pearl, a radio and pop artist.
He attended Stuivsant High School, graduated from New York University and later served in the army. Bernie made his way into the world of show business through the correspondence department at the William Morris Agency (WMA) in New York. Becoming a talent search agent, Brillstein was promoted to a television production manager at the WMA by the 1960s. Also in the 1960s, Bernie co-founded the vocal group The Doodletown Pipers with Ward Ellis, George Wilkins and Jerry Weintraub.
When Brillstein moved to Los Angeles, he opened his own company, The Brillstein, in 1969, where he continued to manage stars and develop television programs. Bernie has produced such television hits as the musical comedy series "Hee Haw", the world famous "The Muppet Show" and the television show "Saturday Night Live" (SNL).
Subsequently, Brillstein was the manager of several SNL alumni.
In San Francisco, California, he met Brad Gray at a teleconference in the 1980s. In 1991, Brillstein co-founded Brillstein-Gray Entertainment, which launched the Larry Sanders Show and The Sopranos TV series.
In 1996, Brillstein sold his stake in Brillstein-Gray Entertainment. In 1999, he co-authored an autobiography with David Renzin, and two years later, on April 18, 2001, a star with his name appeared on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
