Anna Mae Wong is the first Chinese-born actress to conquer Hollywood.

The actress was born on January 3, 1905 in Los Angeles, where the older generation of her dynasty immigrated. The Wong family, which besides Anna had six children, lived in the Irish-German quarter of the city. However, in 1907 they were forced to leave this house and move to Chinatown, from where, two years later, they moved to a quarter for immigrants from Eastern Europe and Mexico.

Even as a child, Anna was fond of cinema and just raved about an acting career. Knowing about the addictions of a twelve-year-old girl, a family friend related to the film industry decided to help the dream come true. So, in 1919, the first film with Anna Mae Wong was released - the drama Red Lantern. Then Anna decides to take a pseudonym. Although the debut of the young actress was successful, the father did not recognize the choice of his daughter, as a result of which he moved away from her.

One of the most notable films in Anna's filmography can rightfully be considered the drama The Victims of the Sea - this is the first color Hollywood film in which the girl played the main role.

Although films starring Anna Mae Wong were popular with the public, the actress's race became an obstacle to her success. Racial discrimination has not spared the film industry either. Even when the infringement of the colored population of the country was not very large-scale, the directors could afford to create pictures, the main characters of which were representatives of different races. But already in 1930, a code was adopted that prohibited making films with such subjects. And although Anna worked a lot, and her acting skill was brilliant, due to the ban she got only minor roles.

In 1928, Wong decides to go to Europe, where the wave of racial discrimination has not reached. The main roles of Anna Mae Wong are not long in coming, the actress is quickly gaining popularity. Some German and British films with Anna's participation, albeit in a truncated format, still reach the American viewer. After receiving an offer of profitable cooperation from the film company Paramount Pictures three years after leaving, Anna returns to America. In 1931, the actress got the lead role in the crime drama film Daughter of the Dragon, but the success of the film does not diminish the pressure of racial discrimination. Anne Wong is increasingly being denied the lead roles, and she decides to return to the UK. Here she again starred in films and plays in theaters. But, an earlier signed contract with Paramount Pictures obliges Wong to return to his homeland. In the late 30s, the actress gets several main roles, but with the outbreak of World War II, her career begins to fade. In 1941, Japan began active military operations against the United States. That became the reason for hostility towards the Japanese and all Asians in general. Over the course of ten years, Anna has only appeared on the silver screen four times, twice in the title role (Lady from Chongqing, Bombs over Burma). The last film with Anna Mae Wong is Portrait in Black, which premiered in 1960.
