Born March 19, 1987, she is an American professional wrestler who became famous for her performances in the WWE Wrestling Federation under the name A.J. Lee (AJ Lee). She served as General Manager of Raw from July 23, 2012 to October 22, 2012 when she stepped down. Mendes enrolled in wrestling school in March 2007, where she trained for six months prior to her first official match. In the following years, she competed in several federations, including Women Superstars Uncensored (WSU) as Miss April. At WSU she teamed with Brooke Carter where they won the WSU Tag Team titles.
In May 2009, Brooks was signed to World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), and was sent to Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW), the WWE training ground, where she began performing as A.J. Lee. At FCW, she was the FCW Queen and FCW Diva Champion, and was also the first person to hold two titles at the same time. In 2010, she participated in the third season of the NXT, having already dropped her last name. In May 2011, she joined the SmackDown brand, forming a team with Caitlyn known as Tough Chicks .
By her own admission, she is a nerd, a tomboy, comic book and video game lover. The WWE maintained her image as different from the typical WWE divas and promoted her as the "Geek Goddess." In 2012 and 2014 she received the Slammy award in the Diva of the Year nomination.
