April 8, 1912 - October 12, 1969 - Norwegian figure skater, performing in singles and pair skating, and later an American actress.
The first and only three-time Olympic champion (1928, 1932, 1936) in women's single skating. Shares with Gillis Grafstrom and Irina Rodnina the record for the number of Olympic gold medals in figure skating (3 each). Ten-time world champion (1927-1936) and six-time European champion (1931-1936) .
Leaving amateur sports in 1936 at the age of 24, she became the star of Hollywood ice ballet. In 1927-1958 she starred in 15 films in Hollywood (the most famous "Sun Valley Serenade"). In 1941 she became an American citizen.
