Born December 10, 1951, Madison, Wisconsin, USA is an American writer and journalist.
She graduated with honors from college and then worked as a waitress. Then Mitchard entered the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she studied literature. In 1979, she took up a position as a journalist for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel newspaper.
In 1985, Mitchard published the first biographical book, Mother Less Child. In 1996, she decided to try her hand at writing fiction and released the novel The Deep End of the Ocean, which tells the story of a mother whose son disappeared at a hotel. This book became famous thanks to the Oprah Winfrey Show, where the TV presenter invited Mitchard. After the broadcast, the book sold over 3 million copies and was on The New York Times bestseller list for 29 weeks, 13 of which held the top position. USA Today ranked The Deep End of the Ocean as the second most significant work of the past 25 years.
Mitchard's debut work was followed by books aimed at both adults and youth and children. Among her works was a biography about the American philosopher and sociologist Jane Addams. In 1999, Mitchard's The Most Wanted was nominated for an Orange Award.
