Born March 23, 1940, Fitzgerald, Georgia, USA - American poet, professor at the American University, memoirist, publicist and writer.
Graduated from Randolph-Macon Women's College in Lynchburg, VA, and received her BA from the University of Florida. In 1975, she received her master's degree from the University of San Francisco, where she eventually became professor of artistic creation, director of the Poetry Center, and chairman of the Department of Creativity.
In 1996 she published the book “Under the Tuscan Sun. The novel took first place on the New York Times bestseller list, and stayed on that list for two years. In 2003, based on the book, the film "Under the Tuscan Sun" was released. In 1999, Mayes solidified her literary success with her second book, Bella Tuscany: The Sweet Life in Italy, which also became an international bestseller.
