June 29, 1911 - April 27, 1995 - American actress of Canadian descent.
She was born in Vancouver to the family of a Canadian Army officer who died shortly after her birth in World War I. In 1919, after the death of her mother from tuberculosis, she was completely orphaned and ended up in an orphanage. At the age of ten, she was adopted by famous Hollywood filmmaker Cecil B. DeMille and his wife Constance.
For the first time on the cinema screens, DeMille appeared in 1930 in the film of her adoptive father "Madame Satan". In later years of her film career, the actress starred in 24 more films, including Call of the Wild (1935), Crusades (1935), Banjo on My Knee (1936), Ramona (1936), Blockade (1938) and Undefeated (1947) before retiring from filming in 1956.
In 1937, DeMille married actor Anthony Quinn, from whom she gave birth to five children: Christopher (1939-1941), Christina (born December 1, 1941), Catalina (born November 21, 1942), Duncan (born August 4, 1945) and Valentin (born December 26, 1952). Their eldest son, Christopher, died at the age of two after drowning in the pool of a family friend, actor W.C. Field. In 1953, the actress accepted on behalf of her husband the Oscar awarded to him, due to the fact that he himself could not attend the ceremony. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1965 due to Quinn's extramarital affairs.
Catherine DeMille died in 1995 at the age of 84 from complications of Alzheimer's.
