January 31, 1892 - October 10, 1964 nee Edvard Israel Iskowitz - American comedian, dancer, singer, and songwriter.
Born into a family of Jewish immigrants from the Russian empire.
He was very popular on Broadway (particularly in productions of The Siegfeld Folly), radio, and in the early days of television. In the United States, he earned the nickname "Apostle Zhivchik" because his super-rated radio shows, which are funny stories about his wife Ida and their five daughters, drew huge audiences in front of the receivers. His large eyes wide open gave him the nickname "The Eyes of the Banjo" from his eponymous stringed musical instrument. They also became his trademark and were often caricatured in illustrations with his image.
His performances continued until 1953, and Kantor himself died in 1964 - he died at his home in Beverly Hills from a heart attack. A year after his death, he was awarded an honorary Oscar.
