January 13, 1887 - February 9, 1966 - American singer, actress, comedian and radio presenter of Ukrainian-Jewish origin. Born in Tulchin, Russian Empire, to a Jewish family. Her family emigrated to the United States when she was still a child and settled in Hartford, Connecticut. Her parents changed their last name to Abuza and opened their own restaurant, where Sonya first began to sing in front of visitors. In 1903, at the age of 17, she married Louis Tooke, under whose influence she chose the stage name Sophie Tucker in 1906. In marriage, she gave birth to a son, but soon divorced her husband. She was subsequently married twice more, but both of her marriages lasted less than 5 years. She began her professional career as a comedian of vaudeville and burlesque (not least because of her corpulence) and as a performer of music on the piano. Subsequently, heavily made up, she sang African American songs, from 1909 she took part in theatrical productions of "The Siegfeld Folly" and in the same year began performing at the Music Hall. In 1914 she performed in a vaudelville performance at the Palace Theater in New York. She recorded her first song in 1911 ("Some of These Days, which became very popular), and gained wide recognition in 1925 with the release of the song" My Yiddishe Momme. She sang jazz and retime songs, and also created many comic musical compositions. She also played several comic roles in feature films. In 1938 she became president of the American Federation of Actors' Trade Unions. The peak of her fame came in the 1930s, and in her songs she often raised the topic of sex, which was not characteristic of the absolute majority of artists of that era. For her extravagant behavior on stage back in 1928, she received the nickname The Last of the Red Hot Mamas. In 1938-1939 she hosted her own radio show, aired several times a week. In 1945 she published her autobiography. In the 1950s and early 1960s, until almost her death, she actively appeared on television.
