November 15, 1911 - April 16, 2005 - British actress and dancer. She began her career with performances at the West End Music Hall. In 1934, Walsh made her film debut, and in 1936, after her marriage to film director David Lean, her film career began to develop rapidly. In the 1940s, she appeared in the films In Which We Serve (1942), Great Expectations (1946), Oliver Twist (1948) and a number of others. In 1949, Walsh and Lean's marriage fell apart due to the latter's betrayal with actress Anne Todd. Throughout the 1950s, Kay Walsh continued to act in films, appearing, among other things, in films by Ronald Nime and Alfred Hitchcock (Stage Fear). By the actress's own admission, her favorite film role was Miss D. Cocker, the barmaid, in the comedy Lips of an Artist (1957) with Alec Guinness in the title role. Walsh remained active in films until her retirement in 1981. The actress spent her last years in Chelsea, London, where in 2005 she died in one of the hospitals from numerous burns after an accident.
