Born October 26, 1945, Atlanta, Georgia, USA is an American writer and screenwriter.

At the insistence of his father, a career naval officer, he entered the Citadel military academy in Charleston, South Carolina, from which he graduated in 1967. As a cadet, he wrote and published his first book, The Boo, in a small publishing house in Virginia. lyrical tones recreate the life of the academy in the 1960s.

Conroy's first attention-grabbing book was The Water Is Wide (1972), which is based on the author's experience of teaching black children on a coastal island in South Carolina. Exposing racism, exposing the monstrous living conditions of his students earned Conroy the National Education Workers Association award.

The book's success has made Conroy a professional writer. 1976 saw The Great Santini, an autobiographical novel about childhood experiences. By the years spent at the academy, the writer returned in his next novel, The Lords of Discipline (1980). The novel was filmed in 1983. Conroy's most successful book is considered The Prince of Tides (1986; Russian translation under the title. Lord of the Straits, 1994). This impressive and rewarding novel recreates the bizarre story of the Wingo family, in some ways echoing the story of Conroy himself. The book, with a circulation of over 5 million copies, brought Conroy worldwide recognition. Barbara Streisand shot her famous film (1991). The film received an Oscar nomination for Best Picture of the Year and Best Actor.
