He studied at Columbia University in New York, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. After that, he went to Iran for three years to watch the national cinema there.
His cinematic interests are cuts of the lives of the most ordinary people, about which Hollywood cinema does not like to narrate at all. Such an unusual interest automatically classifies Bahrani's films as "auteurs".
