The son of a policeman who sang quite well in addition to his service. He spent his childhood in working-class areas in the city of Livorno. As a little boy, Paolo Virdzi loved to read very much, in particular classical literature. Favorite writers were Charles Dickens and Mark Twain.

Before writing scripts and going in this direction, he studied philosophy and literature at the University of Pisa. At the same time, showing his creative potential, he was a participant in one of the theaters. Later he studied screenwriting, after which he even received a diploma (1987). He studied screenwriting at the Cinematography Experimental Center in Rome. They taught cinema to the future screenwriter and director Gianni Amelio and Furio Scarpelli - a personality in Italian cinema is far from the last. During his studies under his leadership, Paolo already had several short films under his belt that were no longer realistic to find. It was Furio Scarpelli who helped the young screenwriter enter the cinema. Together with several other writers, they worked on the script for the film "Time to Kill" (1989). A little later, the screenwriter and director is still working with Furio Scarpelli, but already on his film, which was "Hard Boiled Eggs" (1997). The film won several awards at the Venice Film Festival. Further, the filmmaker repeatedly receives other awards and almost always his films participate in all kinds of film festivals.

In 2013, the director's next film, entitled “Every single day,” was released, the script for which he wrote with his friend Francesco Bruni, with whom he had worked more than once.
