Lived with a Jewish family of lawyer Martin Brecker and schoolteacher Rhoda Brecker. Allison is the third of the fours, before her sister and brother were born - Lisa Brecker and John Brecker, and after her - sister Jody Brecker. The children grew up in Woodmere on Long Island, southern New York, and were raised in traditional Jewish traditions. In their homeland, they were widely known as the "Fours Breaker" and appeared in advertising for baby food "Beech-Nut".
Shermur attended the University of Pennsylvania Law School, then became a member of the California State Bar. While at university, she entered the campus competition and won the grand prize - lunch with Stanley Jaffe, executive producer of Columbia Pictures. Jaffe became Shermur's lifelong mentor and role model.
After graduating from law school, Shermur was hired as an assistant at Columbia TriStar. She worked at The Walt Disney Company as Vice President from 1994 to 1997, where she worked on the film George of the Jungle. She then joined Universal Studios as Executive Vice President of Filmmaking.
Shermur also worked for two years at Paramount Pictures as executive vice president of filmmaking, where she was responsible for the studio's literary production.
In 2008, she moved to Lionsgate as President of Filmmaking. During her time at Lionsgate, she produced the first two Hunger Games films and executive produced the last two.
Shearmur formed her own production company, Allison Shearmur Productions. In 2017, her company's chief executive produced the television film Dirty Dancing.
