Born May 6, 1960, Derry, Londonderry, Northern Ireland, UK is an American actress, singer and producer of Irish descent.
She attended Thornhill College. Initially, Downey wanted to become an artist, and received a bachelor's degree from the University of Brighton, but later decided to master the profession of an actress, graduating from a drama studio in London, where she performed in plays by Shakespeare, Shaw, and Chekhov.
Downey is best known for her role as Monica in the television series Touched by an Angel, in which she starred from 1994 to 2003. The series achieved popularity and lasted for almost a decade. Downey received two Emmy nominations for Best Actress in a Drama Series in 1997 and 1998, and a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Television Series - Drama in 1998 and 1999.
In recent years she has been mainly engaged in the production of documentaries and cartoons.
Downey co-created and produced the miniseries The Bible, which aired in March 2013.
