Born December 6, 1953 in Detroit, Michigan, USA (according to other sources, was born in Whitewater, Wisconsin) .
He dreamed of becoming a singer, but after breaking his voice he decided that he would be a theatrical actor. Graduated from the Interlochen Academy of Arts, studied drama at the Winston-Salem School of the Arts, North Carolina. In 1967, he performed at the student theater at Michigan State University.
In the early 1970s - on Broadway and off-Broadway in cameo roles. Then he plays leading roles in the plays of Chekhov, Shakespeare, Arthur Miller, in musicals. He debuted on TV in 1975. In the movie, a year later he starred as his brother in the film "Song of Me" (1976) .
He gained worldwide fame after his brilliant performance of the role of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in Milos Forman's Oscar-winning film Amadeus (1984, David di Donatello, Oscar and Golden Globe nominations, Prize of the Italian Association of Journalists) .

For voicing Quasimodo in the animated film The Hunchback of Notre Dame II (2002) received an Emmy nomination in 2003.
Since 1998 he has been working as a theater director in Seattle, Washington. In 1990, he was nominated for a Tony for his role in the play A Few Good People. Tom Hals is known for his excellent vocal skills.
