Born November 4, 1962, Miami, Florida, USA - American writer.
Was adopted three days after birth under the name John Richard, but no one calls him by his first name.
His father wanted his son, like him, to become a lawyer. However, Rick received a degree in English Language and Literature from Roosevelt University in Chicago. Returning from his studies in Florida, he worked for some time part-time as a teacher and played in an amateur theater, but then got a job at the American tax office, where he worked for ten years as a tax inspector.
In 2004, Rick quit his job to become a professional writer. He began his new career with the book of memoirs "Confessions of a Tax Collector" (2004). Also in 2004, he published his first novel, The Extraordinary Adventures of Alfred Kropp, which was named Best Book for Children by Publishers Weekly and was a finalist for the 2005 Carnegie Medal. His novel, The Monster's Apprentice, won the Michael L. Printz Award in 2010.
