The surname Bernier came from an ancestor who was a French Huguenot. He studied at Bradfield College, at the age of 18 he joined the army, but was demobilized after 4 months. Studied at the Universities of Manchester and London. Before becoming a writer, he tried various professions, from mechanic and motorcycle courier to English teacher in Colombia.
Louis de Bernier called the first three novels "Latin American Trilogy", as they were written under the influence of his stay in Colombia and the writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
