January 3, 1907 - March 10, 1986 - American actor and director. Before starting his acting career, he served in the cavalry for four years, and then moved to London, where he made his debut on the stage. There he was noticed by a Hollywood talent scout, after which Ray Milland moved to the United States and signed a contract with Paramount Pictures .
After the outbreak of World War II, Ray Milland tried to enlist in the United States Air Force Volunteers, but was rejected due to an injury to his left arm. Nevertheless, in 1944 he was enlisted in the ranks of the army, but as an aviation instructor at military bases in the Pacific Ocean. In 1939, Milland starred in The Imperial Hotel, which featured a horse riding scene. Ray, as a professional rider, insisted that he would perform it himself without a stunt double, but during the filming his jump on a horse was unsuccessful - Milland fell into the nearby small scenery. With multiple fractures, he was taken to hospital, where he stayed for several weeks. Another unpleasant incident happened to him in 1942 on the set of the movie "Reap the Storm", where the character of Milland had to have curly hair. To do this, the studio persuaded Ray to use hot tongs, with which his straight hair was always curled. Over the years, Milland often complained that because of this procedure he began to go bald prematurely, and he had to move ahead of time from the main roles to the secondary ones. In the early 1940s, Milland had major roles in films such as Resurrect, My Love (1940), I Need Wings (1941), The Major and Baby (1942), Eternity and One Day. (1943), The Uninvited (1944) and The Ministry of Fear (1944) .
The pinnacle of his career came in 1946, when he received the Academy Award for Best Actor in Lost Weekend. His performance at the Academy Awards was the shortest in history: Ray Milland simply bowed and left the stage. The same role earned him the Golden Globe and the Cannes Film Festival Prize. Since the early 1960s, Milland has acted more on television, where he also achieved great success. Sometimes he still continued to appear on movie screens, where he had roles in the films "Faster, let's get married!" (1964), "Love Story" (1970), "Escape to Witch Mountain" (1975), "Oliver's Story" (1977) and "Sea Serpent" (1984) .
In 1932, Milland married Mariel Webber, who bore him two children. Their marriage lasted until Milland's death on March 10, 1986. He died of lung cancer in Torrance, California, at the age of 79. For his contributions to film and television, Ray Milland has been honored with two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
