Born August 24, 1947, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil is a Brazilian screenwriter, actor and producer.

At the age of seven, he was sent to the Jesuit school of St. Ignatius of Loyola, where his desire to write books was first manifested. The desire to become a writer did not find understanding among his family, therefore, under their pressure, he entered the law faculty of the University of Rio de Janeiro, but soon dropped out of his studies and became more involved in journalism. As a result, the disagreements between him and the family went on increasing, in the end, seventeen-year-old Paulo was forcibly placed in a private psychiatric clinic for treatment. Neither the electric shock treatment due to the schizophrenia that manifested itself, nor the second course of treatment changed his self-confidence - and then he escaped from the clinic, wandered for a while, and eventually returned home. A year later, he joined the amateur theater movement, which became a mass phenomenon in Brazil in the 60s - not only an art phenomenon, but also social protest. Theatrical and protest activity for Coelho ended in the hospital, from where he again fled, but lack of money forced him to return home again. As a result, after the third course of treatment, his family came to terms with the fact that he would not be doing "normal" work. Paulo Coelho continued to pursue theater and journalism.

In 1970, he began traveling to Mexico, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Europe and North Africa. Two years later, Coelho returned to Brazil and began composing poetry for songs that later became very popular, working with famous Brazilian performers such as Raul Seixas. As he admits in an interview, at this time he became acquainted with the works of the controversial English mystic, Aleister Crowley, which influenced his work. It extended not only to music, but to plans to create an "Alternative Society", which was to become an anarchist community in the state of Minas Gerais, based on Crowley's idea: "Do what you want - this is the whole law." The Brazilian military, who came to power in the 1964 coup, considered the project to be subversive and imprisoned all the alleged members of the group. It is also known that while in prison, Coelho, his wife and Raul Seixas were tortured. Coelho got out of prison unexpectedly helped by the past: he was declared insane and released.

Later, while traveling with his current fourth wife, Christina, in Holland, he meets a person (he calls "J" in "Valkyries", "Pilgrimage", "Aleph" and on his website "Warrior of Light"), which changed his life and dedicated him to Christianity. He became a member of a Catholic group known as the RAM (Regnus Agnus Mundi), where "J" was his "Master". In 1986, he walked the Dear Santiago, the ancient Spanish pilgrimage route, and later described everything that happened in the book "Diary of a Magician". In 1988, immediately after the release of The Alchemist, Jay sent Paulo and his wife Christina on a 40-day pilgrimage to the Mojave Desert in the United States of America. Paulo later describes these events in the book "Valkyries".

More than 86 million books by Paulo Coelho have been sold in 150 countries worldwide, translated into 67 languages. He has received numerous literary awards in various countries, including France (La Legion d'Honneur) and Italy (Grinzane Cavour). His roster of novels includes The Alchemist, based on Borges' A Tale of Two Dreamers, and has sold over 11 million copies translated into 41 languages, which marked the beginning of the film, directed by Laurence Fishburne, a Coelho fan.

Many of the writer's books were banned in Iran, which Coelho personally announced in his official blog, with the confiscation of 1,000 copies, which were later still admitted to print.
