Born September 16, 1948, London, UK - English writer.

Poetry was also present during Julia's childhood. When she was 5 years old, her father gave her "The Book of a Thousand Poems", and her grandmother introduced her to "the poetry of nonsense." After elementary school, Julia attended a girls' school. As a child and teenager, she performed on stage, sang in a children's opera group and learned to play the piano. She learned languages ??easily: she learned French and German at school, and later took up Italian. By the age of 19, she had mastered all three languages.

Julia studied drama and French at the University of Bristol (1967-1970) and graduated with honors. During her studies, she played in productions and learned to play the guitar. She lived in Paris for half a year, where, as a training internship, she played the guitar and sang in a cafe for money with two friends, Maureen Perkis and Malcolm Donaldson. In Paris, their trio was noticed by a French entrepreneur. By December 1969, Julia and Malcolm formed an ensemble, organizing performances for university events. In 1970, they visited America, traveling by bus from the east to the west coast, earning money as street musicians in Seattle and San Francisco. Upon their return, they played a duet in restaurants and participated in various festive events, for which Julia herself composed songs.

Julia composed songs in French and Italian. By 1971, she took a job in London as a secretary and associate editor at a publishing house. On weekends, she and Malcolm were involved in theatrical performances for poor children. She will remember this experience of interacting with children when she starts organizing her own shows, already being a recognized children's writer. Julia and Malcolm got married in September 1972. Julia composed an operetta, which the newlyweds and witnesses performed at a reception at Berg House. A photograph of their wedding hangs there today. Julia later worked as a radio secretary, editor of stories and short stories, and also worked for the BBC, wrote lyrics for children's TV programs, and taught English. In addition, she wrote two musicals for children, and in the period 1974-1976 she was in charge of a children's theater workshop. In 1978, her first child, Hamish, was born, and in 1981, her second, Alastair, in 1987, her third, Jesse, also known as Jerry. In the 1980s, Julia wrote and sang songs for radio programs, played in amateur and street performances. She also volunteered at school and listened to children read aloud. With these children, she staged a play in which the roles were constantly changing until the children learned the entire text by heart. This approach proved to be very effective as the children felt more confident. Later, they played a performance in front of the whole class.

In 1990-1994 Julia again began writing songs for various BBC programs. In 1991, Methuen Publishing proposed turning one of her songs, written in 1975, into a children's picture book. In 1993, the book was published with illustrations by the German artist Axel Scheffler, who lived in London. This event was a turning point for Julia: she realized that her talent for songwriting could be applied to writing books. In the period 1993-1999 she wrote plays for children and adolescents, as well as folk tales. During this time, she began visiting Scottish schools and libraries, often with Malcolm and his guitar.

In the 1990s, a book was published with text by Julia Donaldson and illustrations by Axel Schaeffler, which immediately brought great success to both of them. The book has won several prestigious awards and has been translated into over 40 languages. More than 10 million copies have been sold worldwide. Since then, writer Julia Donaldson and artist Axel Scheffler have been constantly working together on books for children, including Gruffalo's Daughter, I Want to Mom! and others.

Julia Donaldson has written about 80 works in total, 67 of which are published. Her books are children's prose and poetry, plays for children and educational literature. Julia continues to live by creativity and charity work.
