He graduated from Bishop George Ara's School in Edison, New Jersey in 1986 and Rutgers University in 1990.
During his first year in the film industry, DeSanto met and befriended Brian Singer, who gave Tom a production position at Brian's company, Bad Hat Harry, while working on his film, The Able Apprentice, which followed a partnership attempt to revive Star Cruiser "Galaxy"".
