September 1, 1920 - October 6, 2000 - American actor and stunt performer
His father was an engineer and his mother was a housewife. The father died when he was 7 years old; he lived with his mother, two sisters and an aunt in downtown Los Angeles.
His film career began when he was offered a job as a stuntman with a salary of $ 7 a day plus lunch. Since 1937 he has been acting in films where he performs various stunts as a rider. However, until 1963, his name was not indicated in the credits. The first role with words was performed in 1976 in the film The Duchess and the Dirty Fox, in the credits of which he is listed as Dick Fransworth. Most of the films with the actor are certainly westerns. He also starred in television series.
In 1978, he was first nominated for an Academy Award for his supporting role in The Horseman Approaches. But the real fame comes to him after the film Canadian-made Raider, where he played the famous robber Bill Miner, for whose role he received a Genie Award. Perhaps the most famous film starring Farnsworth is The Simple Story of David Lynch, Based on True Events. For his role as 73-year-old Alvin Straight, he received another Oscar nomination, now for the lead male role. Farnsworth was also nominated for the Golden Globe Award three times. Farnsworth has its own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
In 1947 he married Margaret Hill (1919-1985), with whom he had been married for 38 years. She became the mother of his two children: Diamond and Missy. After the death of his wife, he moved to his own 60 acre (240,000 m2) ranch in Lincoln. Towards the end of his life, Farnsworth became engaged to Julie van Walin, a flight attendant who was 35 years his junior. in 1999 he was diagnosed with end-stage bone cancer. Unable to withstand the painful agony, he shot himself on his ranch. He is buried next to his wife Margaret in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Los Angeles.
