Born April 30, 1954, Wellington, New Zealand is a New Zealand director, screenwriter, producer, and actress.

Initially, Jane did not want to associate her fate with theater or cinema; in 1975 she graduated from Queen Victoria University of Wellington with a bachelor's degree in anthropology.

In 1976, Jane Campion attended Chelsea Art School in London and traveled throughout Europe. She graduated from the Sydney College of Art, University of Sydney with a degree in painting in 1981; her artistic work was greatly influenced by the work of the surrealist painter Frida Kahlo and the sculptor Joseph Beuys. However, Campion soon became disillusioned with painting, believing that this art form had too many limitations, and turned to cinema. In 1980, she created her first short film, Brocade. "Sweetheart" (1989) was Campion's directorial debut in a feature film and was nominated for a Palme d'Or in the 1989 Kan Film Festival, but lost to Steven Soderbergh's Sex, Lies and Videos. Campion consolidated her directorial success with Angel at My Table (1990), which featured a biographical and psychological portrait of New Zealand writer Janet Frame; for this work she received the "Silver Lion" - a special jury prize at the 47th Venice Film Festival. The full second season of Top of the Lake premiered in May 2017 at the Cannes Film Festival. Season 2 premiered in the UK on BBC Two on 27 July 2017. The entire season was also released on BBC iPlayer.
