April 27, 1935, Athens - January 24, 2012, Piraeus, Greece - Greek director, screenwriter, producer and actor.

Angelopoulos studied law in Greece. Then, after completing military service, he went to Paris and entered the Sorbonne, but soon left for the IDHEC (Institute of Higher Cinematic Education). In 1964 he returned to Greece, worked as a journalist and film critic for the leftist magazine Democratic Choice.

Created the first short film in 1968. In the 1970s, he directed a series of several films dedicated to the history of Greece in the 20th century: Days of 1936 (1972), The Comedians (1975) and The Hunters (1977). He is known for his style, which is characterized by slow-motion narration and long shots (for example, in the movie "Comedians" there are only 80 frames for 230 minutes of screen time).

The films of Angelopoulos have been selected for the main program of the Cannes Film Festival six times and won awards at four of them, including the main prize of the festival - Palme d'Or (1998, for the film Eternity and a Day). In addition, Angelopoulos was awarded the main prize for the best Greek film at the Thessaloniki Film Festival five times.

In 1991, for the film The Interrupted Step of the Stork, he was excommunicated from the Greek Orthodox Church by Metropolitan Florinsky Augustine.

Has often worked with cameraman Yorgos Arvanitis, composer Eleni Karaindru and screenwriter Tonino Guerra.

In 2000 Angelopoulos headed the jury of the XXII Moscow International Film Festival.

January 24, 2012 Theodoros Angelopoulos was hit by a motorcycle during the filming of the new film "Another Sea", which took place on a highway in the southern outskirts of Athens. After being hit, the director fell into a four-meter concrete well. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition, where doctors tried to help him in the intensive care unit, but the director died.
