Born August 2, 1943, London, England, UK - British writer.

Started writing at the age of 10.

Studied at the Sorbonne (1961-1962), graduated from the University of East Anglia with a degree in English literature, where she later (1988-1995) taught literary courses, was elected Chancellor of the University in 2013.

While still a university student, she met the writer Angus Wilson, who played the role of a mentor and convinced the aspiring writer to finish her first work, Sadler's Birthday, at all costs (first published in 1976).
This novel was followed by Letter to Sister Benedicta (1978), The Cupboard (1981) and The Swimming Pool Season (1985), which won the Angel Literary Award.

Starting with the novel "Restoration" (1989), which also won the Angel Literary Award and the best work of the year according to the Sunday Express, Rose has been assigned the title of author of historical works.

However, the writer herself diligently avoids genre stereotypes and experiments in prose not only exclusively on historical themes, but also successfully connecting the present and the past. In 1996, the novel "Restoration" was filmed and received two Oscars - for the best decoration and for the best costumes. However, the writer was unhappy with the adaptation of her novel and henceforth decided to write scripts herself based on her works.

In 1983, Rose Tremaine was voted one of Britain's finest young writers by Grant's literary magazine. She was twice on the jury of the most prestigious British Booker Prize - in 1988 and in 2000, and in 1990 she was herself nominated and short-listed for this award.

In addition to novels, Rose Tremaine has been successful in the storytelling genre and writes plays for radio and television (Temporary Shelter, which received the BBC sponsored Giles Cooper Award; One Night in Winter). In 2000 she was awarded the honorary title of Doctor of Letters from the University of East Anglia.
