Actor Bernard Hughes was born on July 16, 1915 in the northeastern United States in the town of Bedford Hills. Hughes' parents at one time arrived in America from Northern Europe, or rather from Ireland. Bernard attended a private high school and later college in Manhattan. In his early years, Bernard dabbled in various professions: docker, retail salesman, assistant editor of the American daily business newspaper The Wall Street Journal. While serving in the army from 1943 to 1945, Hughes was involved in the Second World War.
