When Kisha was four years old, her family moved to New Zealand. Originally an Australian citizen, she was granted New Zealand citizenship in 2001.
On January 27, 2004, Kisha Castle-Hughes became the youngest actress to be nominated for an Academy Award for her role as Paikea Apiran (Pai) in Whale rider directed by Niki Caro. With no acting experience, eleven-year-old Kisha came straight from a school class in Oakland to shoot a film. She received widespread critical acclaim and an Oscar nomination for Best Actress .
In 2014, she was cast as Obara Sand, one of the Sand Snakes, daughter of Ellaria Sand, for filming in the 5th season of the HBO television series Game of Thrones.
