Kami Garcia grew up near Washington, DC. By the time she was thirteen, her family had moved in with her grandmother and great-grandmother. They have had four generations of women living under the same roof - two were born and raised in North Carolina.
Cami Garcia grew up drinking sweet tea, fresh vegetables cooked with bacon fat, and cookies made from scratch. She was not like them. Cami Garcia wore a lot of black, a lot of rings, and spent hours writing in her notebooks. By the time she graduated from high school, Kami had started writing.
Kami Garcia has an MA in Education and taught in DC until she moved to Los Angeles ten years ago. In addition to writing youth fiction, Kami Garcia is a reading specialist and also leads book groups for children and teens. She learned a lot more from her students than they teach in school. She is very superstitious.
